Trauma-Sensitive Massage
What Is Trauma-Sensitive Massage Therapy & Bodywork?
At HeartMind Resiliency, we help to remove barriers to self care by offering Trauma-Sensitive Massage that supports our clients’ embodiment of well-being. We understand that each individual carries unique experiences in both their minds and bodies, and our approach is specifically designed to create a safe and supportive space for healing and relaxation.
Our highly skilled and compassionate massage therapists are committed to their deep understanding of the impact trauma can have on the body, mind, and spirit. They are trained in specialized approaches that prioritize your comfort, trust, and empowerment throughout the entire session.
In a Trauma-Informed Massage Therapy session, your sense of safety and control always come first. We recognize that trauma can manifest in various ways, and we are committed to providing an environment that fosters healing, respect, and understanding.
Why Trauma-Sensitive Massage and Bodywork?
Massage can be a great way to augment both your self care and psychotherapy experience, particularly for those with a history of trauma. It is also wonderful for anyone seeking exemplary bodywork because it first and foremost is client-centered, collaborative and acknowledges that you are the expert of your own body.
Everyone should feel comfortable when a professional massage therapist is touching you. This is particularly important for those with previous trauma, are uncertain about touch, or who have had an uncomfortable or bad experience with massage in the past. Bodywork can and should feel nurturing, and be a potential source of healing!
What Does a Trauma-Sensitive Massage Look Like?
- A Welcoming Consultation: We begin by taking the time to listen to your unique needs, concerns, and goals. This consultation allows us to tailor the session to your specific preferences and ensures we are aware of any triggers or areas of sensitivity.
- Before a massage begins, you will be invited to "undress to your comfort level.” This is a true invitation! This could mean leaving ALL your clothing on, leaving a few items of clothing on or completely disrobing. Regardless, you will be fully covered with a sheet and/or blanket throughout your session, with only the part of the body being touched, carefully and discreetly uncovered, as you are comfortable. Other types of bodywork, particularly craniosacral therapy, energy work or Reiki and trauma touchwork, are always done fully clothed.
- Clear Communication: Throughout the session, we prioritize open and transparent communication. We encourage you to let us know if anything feels uncomfortable or triggering. We recognize that sometimes words are hard to come by, so we will check with you periodically during the session about your comfort and needs. Your consent and boundaries are of the utmost importance to us, and we will always respect your wishes!
- Gentle and Nurturing Touch: Our therapists are trained in techniques that emphasize gentleness, nurturing, and sensitivity. We may use a slower pace, lighter pressure, and provide ample time for you to adjust and acclimate to the touch. Our aim is to create a soothing experience that promotes relaxation and helps restore a sense of safety and trust.
- Empowerment and Choice: We understand the importance of autonomy and empowerment in the healing process. You are in control of your session, and we encourage you to make choices that best serve your needs. This includes adjusting the pressure, requesting specific areas of focus, or even pausing the session as needed.
- Post-Session Support: If therapeutic touch is new to you, we encourage you to have a follow-up session scheduled with your psychotherapist (or speak to us about a referral, if you do not have a counselor) where you can process any emotions, thoughts or new sensations that may have arisen. Our massage therapists are available to provide resources, guidance, and referrals to further support your healing journey.
At HeartMind Resiliency, we believe that everyone deserves to experience the benefits of massage therapy and bodywork in a safe and trauma-sensitive manner. Whether you are healing from past trauma, living with chronic stress or pain, dealing with pre- or post-medical procedures, or are simply seeking a nurturing experience, our Trauma-Informed Massage Therapy is here to support you on your path to wellness.
